About the artist
He was born on 23rd April, 1981 in Ondo but hails from Ikere-Ekiti. At the early age of nine years, Philip exhibited an aptitude for arts: after his secondary education, he resolved to take up a career in visual art.
He derives his inspiration from the Holy Scriptures. Therefore, most of his works carry bibilical themes and titles. He believes that God is the giver of artistic prowess, which He has given him as a platform to His (God’s) mind and intents known to mankind. He is therefore tagged as “Gospel Painter” by colleagues and friends. He has participated in many group shows.
In 2003, he gained admission into the Dept. of Art and Design, The Polytechnic, Ibadan where he bagged a National Diploma in 2005. Because of his love for the art of painting, Philip decided to opt for it as an area of specialization. He proceeded to the School of Art and Design, Auchi, Edo State, where he graduated with Higher National Diploma in Painting in 2008.
After graduation and completion of the mandatory one year post graduate service program, he relocated to Osogbo where he met Bisi Fabunmi, one of the pioneers of Osogbo Art School and had several experiences from him.
Philip Olanipekun’s work reveals the traces of his two backgrounds as he successfully merged his experience of art(which he got by attending a formal Art School) with the one he acquired traditionally through a master artist, Bisi Fabunmi.
